The General Election.
The result of the general election will cause much surprise iii the colony from the fact that instead of the Opposition having made headway they have lost eight seats to the Government. Everything in Foxton was as quiet as j could be wished, a general Stream of voters ! being maintained so that at the last the expected rush never took place. The deputy-returning officer at Foxton managed J to announce the result of the local polling! about sev:-n o'olock. Mr Stevens scoured a majority of 189 over his opponent, Mr Bruce, at Foxton, ■end was returned for the electorate by 139, being more than double hia majority at the last election. During the evening the results of the polling at the various booths were posed on a transparent screen at the Herald Office and the announcements were watched by a large crowd with much interest. During the evening the results of the polling at Palmerston, Wellington and Otaki were also announced. The numbers showing Mr Stevens' majority were received with cheers, and Mr George Gray, chairman of Mr Stevens' committee, announced that Mr Stevens desired to thank the electors. At the closing of the office at 10.30 three cheers were given for the proprietor of the Manawatu Herald for his enterprise.
