Tarred and Feathered.
The Marifzbnrg Witness's Lady■mith correspondent wired on 18th September : A meeting for the formation of a town guard was held ! asfc night, and was very largely it, tended. During the meeting a man from Johannesburg asked whether rafugee3 could enrol themselves, and was answered in the :ffi-niative. When the enrolment was proceeding the same man was 7ery bu9ily engaged hanging aboqfc as if in search of information, and ictually had a confab with the Secretary of the South African League. Fortunately the Secretary had been forewarned as to the individual'^ character. A rumour that be waß a Transvaal spy quickly spread, and ifter the meeting was over he was visited in the privacy of hia bedroom md charged with being the Ellis who was mixed up in the so called Johannesburg conspiracy, and with being a member of the Transvaal Secret Service. In spite of protestations to the contrary, his papers and documents were overhauled, and proved conclusively that the charges against him were well founded, and Ellis was hauled into the main street in front of the Standard Bank, and forthwith tarred and feathered in the orthodox style.
