The "Send-Off" of the Contingent.

The N.Z. Contingent had a wonderful "send-off" on Saturday, immense crowds watching their entrance into Wellington, and the ceremony at Jervois Quay. The enthusiasm was almost wild. The Mayor of Wellington, Lord Ranfurly, the Premier, Captain Russell, and Sir Robert Stout addressed the public and Contingent. The Bishop of Wellington recited a special prayer. The troops having embarked the Waiwera got away at 4.40 p.m., and was escorted as far as the Pinnacles by sixteen steamers. It is estimated these steamers carried from 10,000 to 12,000 persons. We trust that most of those who have left will be spared to return, when they will be received with as much enthusiasm, more would be impossible, as has been shown in their send-off.
