REPORTED BRITISH SUCCESS.
British cavalry patrols engaged the advance forces of the enemy in the vicitity of Actomhomes, at Bester's a town on the Ladysmith-Harrismith railway. Bester's is on the Free State side of the border, and about 15 miles from Lady smith. There were some casualties during the affair.
Sir George White is sending out supports, and a battle is imminent. General Joubert is forwarding troops from Newcastle to Glencoe and Bester's.
A Boer commando from Vryheid its approaching Rorke's Drift. • The following private cablegram was received at Christchurch on Thursday morning, dated Durban, 18th inst.:—
"Another attack Cape border; Boers repulsed with great slaughter. Reported four hundred killeJ. Our casualties nil."
