New Hebrides.

A TRUE CHRISTIAN

H.M.B. Wallaroo has returned from the Now Hebrides, and brings news of the Presbyterian missionaries in the group.

In spite of rumours to the contrary, the Rev Alexander Gillies is safe.

There has been fighting between the natives near this place, but the missionary was not interfered with.

The Rev Frank Paton, on the other side of the island, was twice fired at by a treacherous native, but miraculously escaped.

Mr Paton had been conducting a service. All but three of the natives who attended had left.

One of those remaining suddenly fired.

A native teacher standing by Mr Patnn's side divined the man's intention, stepped in front of the missionary, and received the shot.

The murderer then snatched a rifle from one of the other men, and fired a second time, but missed Mr Paton.

The brave teacher who saved Mr Paton's life died next day from the wound which be had received.

Mi' Carl Nystrotn, a trader, came to Sydney by the Wallaroo. He wa« savagely attacked at Waisisi, and wounded in the leg.
