Church of England Social

Last night the members of All Saints' congregation held a Social afc the Schoolroom to raise funds for the repairs to the parsonage. Owing to the many other meetings bekig held the same evening the attendance * fell short of the usual number, • though the room was well filled. A large part of the audience were children and their restlessness and chatty powers led most to wish that one evening should be devoted to their amusement, and a separate evening set apart for adults* We i leave this suggestion for the conj sideration of the powers that be. | Daring the evening' refreshments were handed' round, which were much appreciated. The music was pleasing all through, bat was not of a character requiring much com— ment;, the only two encores of theevening having been secured by Mn J. W. Robinson and Miss Collins. The Rev. Hugh Leach said he desired to call attention to the progress made in the church work in this distriot, which he though!* might not be very well known. The present parish was, as they knew, a very large one, bat its division had been settled upon. One clergyman would reside at Lavin, and would have the care of the district as far as Tokomaru in the north, to Ohau in the South, and one clergyman would reside at Foxton and would visit Rongotea, Taikorea and the Oroua Bridge. It would ba noticed that this was a great gain ai in, the place of one Vicar there woald be two. Much interest had also been shown all over the district in church work. When he waa at Shannon last Sunday he found that the congregation had the fence round the church and had bung a fine gate. He suggested that they should now take in band the painting of the church,. Afc Levin a lot of energy bad been displayed. Fifteen men had been working in the church ground, and ten drays had been employed in bringing gravel, the result being they had a nice approach to tho church. Then they had an Arbor Day there, and had planted the ground with trees and shrubs. At All Saints', Foxton, someone had presented a large Rochester lamp to the church, and hid alio promised two chaire for the chancel. A good many people grumbled at parsons bat they were much as the parishioners made them. A great deal of help could be given to the clergy in m»ny waya— by doing work which would relieve the clergy of anxiety, and being regular in their attendance at church, and at the work they undertook. At the close of the evening the Vicar thanked the performers for their Bervice3 and the ladies who had provided the refreshments. The musical items were as follows ; -Piano solo, A March, by Mr England; B>ng. "Ohio, Chin. Chinaman" Harold Collins; Song •• Life's Lullaby " R*v. S. H. Lmefa ; Piano solo ".Cliokety Olack" Misa L. Symons ; Reading, M Sleep " Mr Fraser; Song " Last night " Miss Collins ; Piauo solo Miss L. Symons; Song " Ora pro nobis " Miss B. Symons ; Piano solo Miss P.'CMlinn ; Bong "Cherry Ripe" Ute J. W. Robinson (enc) ; Song •• Love's old sweet song " R>v. 8. H. L*.aoh ; Song " Whisper and I shall bear " Miss Collins, and in response to an encore, sang " The gay tomtit." The accompanyißts during the evening were the Misers Collins, Symons, and Mr England. The piano wa9 kindly lent by Mrs Young. Mr A. S. Easton attended to the door, and Mesdames Whyte, W. G. Robinson, Easton, and Wilson attended to the refreshments assisted by many willing bands*
