I gave Mr Thynne notice to do somethinn to prevent water lying on this spot some time ago, but nothing has been done. Will the Council kindly give directions in the matter. On Monday last, August 28th, during a fresh in the river the anchor posts at ths Wirokino ferry were drawn out of the ground on the north side of the river, and the main post broke off at the ground level. Ou Tuesday morning the work of repair was taken in hand, a new post was brought down from Shannon, a hole dug and post set. Holes 20ft long and 6ft deep dug and anchors buried in them, and the ferry was at work agaiu at 4 p.m. on Thursday. During the month shingle has been carted and spread on Cemetery and

Avenue roads, Harbour, Union and Johnstone streets, and the greater part of the boulders have been broken. A new street lamp with copper top has been obtained to replace the one burnt ln Gray's fire. During the evening the Mayor said he regretted very much the retirement of Cre Walsh and Rhodes, and more especially the cause of the retirement of Cr Hennessy, which owing to his wife's health had presented his being present at the last two meetings. He remarked that they had all worked very well together during the time he had occupied the Mayoral chair. Cr Rhodes and Cr Walsh thanked the Mayor for his remarks, and complimented the Mayor and the engineer on their prompt action in repairing the Wirokino Ferry. Cr Westwood then rose and said he had a duty to perform in also handing in his resignation as a Councillor, owing to his business taking him some ao miles away from town. He had enjoyed, the position immensely, and had looked upon his duties as mere child's play. He considered the present Mayor was the best the Borough had yet had, and said he had proved himself alive to the wants of the district. The Mayor thanked Cr Westwood for his flattering remarks, and said it was much to be regretted that four Councillors who had the welfare of the Borough at heart were leaving in a body. After a few other remarks, the ordinary business of the Council was resumed. The Council went into committee to consider an application from Mr J. E. Barham (who waited* on the Council in person), for an auctioneer's license. Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That applications be invited for the position of Fire Inspector at the rate of £20 a year, and that a special meeting be held on Tuesday, 12th instant, to accept same.
