Self-lighting Gas Burner.

Experimental chemists io Germany and England have for years been at work upon processes by which the self-lighting of gas^, burners can ba achieved ; and grea^' succe3B has come t ) experts in both countries. The Wellington Gag Company' recently received a consignment of matchless gas-lighters, which have been entirely satisfactory unders tests applied in both private^ and public building*, including tljia office, not only in Wellington, but in adjaenfc, towns. The mechanism attached to the burner is simple, yet most ingenious, and has the advantage of being economical, strong, and so constructed that duplicate parts can be supplied. Ignition (in lieu of the match lighter) is caused by the chemcil affinity of coal gas and sponge of platinum, the contact of ga3 generating sufficient heat to make incandescent the tiny platinum wire 3 placed alongside tha burner, and the ga? is lit. Whilst the brief operation of ignition is going on, no gag escapes into the room, and when the patent agency of ignition has performed its duty, a remarkable automatic ftotion shuta off the gas from the by-tube, allowing only the connection with the burner to ba U3ed. The igniting agent is not aff cted by the heat from the burner, thus ensuring n lengthy period of usefulness. So successful has been the introduction of tbi3 matchless light into Welling* ton that the company has sold out the whole of its first order, and has sent Home for a further supply.— Post.
