Birthday Ball.

Last night, at the Public Hall, Miss Whyte entertained her friends at a ball to commemorate her attaining, her 21st year. By the list we publish below it is seen her friends are many, and as but few who were invited failed to attend, the hall, though large was very well filled. Miss Whyte, supported by her mother, received her guests, and at half-past eight the dance commenced, and dancing was kept up till z o'clock in the morning. The music was very good, being piano and cornet (Messrs Tombs and Pickering), and for some of the dances Miss Drew kindly played and Mr Tombs added the violin. The floor was in excellent order, and the hall had been decorated with flags and evergreens. Mr J. R. McMillan made an excellent M.C., and everything went as happily as could be desired. On the stage a substantial supper was laid and dainties in sweets and cakes filled in the spaces on the table. During the supper adjournment His Worship the Mayor made a capital speech. He said : Ladies and gentlemen before resuming again the ga>' and festive dance I should like to offer my congratulations to Miss Whyte upon attaining her majority. I have had the pleasure of knowing the young lady since she was a school girl of ten years of age, and a very nice little school girl she was too. I have also been honoured by being numbered amongst her friends during more recent years, and I feel sure that all her friends present here to-night will join with me in saying that her many good qualities have gained a place in their respect and esteem, which will never be effaced. (Applause). I could dwell at some length on her many personal attractions but I am a married man and my very much better half is here, so I refrain. The married gentlemen present will understand my feelings and I may also avoid raising the ire of some of the bachelors who might think I was encroaching upon their privileges. However I feel that I voice the sentiments of all present when I say that the memory of the very pleasant evening we are spending will be a lasting one and that one and all will join with me in wishing Miss Whyte many very happy returns of the day. (Applause). INVITED GUESTS. Messrs C. and O. Austin, Misses Austin (2). Mr and Mrs R. H. Barber, Mr and Mrs W. Barber, Mr Bennett. Mrs J. M. Collins, Misses Collins (2), Mrs C. H.
