Registering Electors.
. Captain Russell (Leader of the Opposition) asked the Government under what clause of the Electoral Act, 1898, or the Electoral Act Amendment Act, 1896, or any other Act, canvassers are appointed by Ministers to wait pn persons with a view to their becoming registered as electors, and oat of what fund, and under what vote of the Housp, are these canvassers paid? Mr Carroll replied that the money was paid out of a vote of last session under the head of " elections " Thp powpr was conferred by clause 22 of the Electoral Act of 1893, which reenacted a similar provision in clause 8 of the Registration of Electors Ac^, 1879. The Government had left the appointment of these men entirely in the hands of the registrar? who were responsible for the men they employed. He could assure the hon gentleman that there had been no attempt whatever on th* part of the Government to suggest to the registrars whom they should employ. H* knsw complaint* had been made, but, on inquiry, many of them had been found to be wild and reckless, and had been refuted. — Times.
