I ♦ ! The special meeting of the above called for striking the general rate and for accepting tender for building whare was held at the Library Buildings last night at 7.30. Present— The Mayor (Cr A. Fraser), and Crs P. Hennessy, J. W. Walsh, A. S. Easton and W. B. Rhodes. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded! by Cr Walsb, That the Foxtoifl Borough Council do strike a genenP* rate of fifteen pence in the £, and a library rate of one penny in the £ on the rateable value of the whole of the rateable property within the Borough for the period commencing on the Ist day of April, 1899, and terminating on V the 31st day of March, 1900, to be due and payable in one sum at the Council Office, Foxton, on the Ist day of July next. Carried. Four tenders were received for building whare:— H. Andresen, £13 2s6d; A. Jonson, £14 ss; A. Speirs^. j£|s 65,-» Theo. Easton, £iq. by Cr Easton, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That Mr Andresen's tender be accepted for building whare at Wirokino at £13 as 6d. Carried. The engineer's report was read as follows : — Owing to the soft state of the roads they axq being much cut up by cartin^^ine]ta|dv^Hieiftf and unlest a spell o£ fine, weather sets in, I think it will be advisable to suspend shingling for a time. The boundary road from north side of racecourse to Russell street has been shingled, and the Moutoa Road to about 5 chains on the Borough side of the gate leading to homestead on Moutoa Estate.' If shingling is suspended for a time, the men should rake in ruts, break boulders, and let water off roads. On the Wirokino Road there is a lot of shingle on the edger of the shingle track which is need on the crown, and the sooner this is attended to the better. On the motion of Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Rhodes, the report was adopted. Permission was granted provisionally to Messrs Hickson and Reeve to erect a flaxmill on the tdv«r bank. A letter was read from }trs Whyte drawing attention to length of grass in Harbour-street. Received. The Town Clerk read 1 a letter saying that the 19th of July had been fixed for the celebration of Arbor Day, and asking the Council to take steps .for its observance. Received. The Council then adjourned.
