New Zealand Meat.
Messrs Fitter and S t ons say in their latest report on the meat markets :-— " The New Zealand mutton trade is just now very satisfactory, or, perhaps, we should say, the prices on this side are satisfactory. Unfortunately, it has not been superior quality that has helped in any way to keep up the price, but owing to the shortage of Australian and River Plate mutton, the second-class and inferior mutton has been realising almost as much as prime quality. This state of affairs is very unfortunate, as it leads shippers to imagine that quality is not duly appreciated on this side. The demand for New Zealand lamb is very satisfactory, and although there has not been any rapid advance in prices, stocks are well in hand, and prospects are decidedly encouraging." Messrs Fitter quote Canterbury sheep at 4d to 4^d per lb ; Wellington, 3^d to 4^d per lb. Canterbury lambs are put down at 4sd to s^d, Southdown New Zealand lambs at 4^d to sd, and Wellington at 4M to 3d per lb.— Post.
