THE AUSTRALIANS AT HOME,
The match Australian Eleven v. South of England was continued, the score of the Englishmen in their first innings stonding at 246. Rain fell early in the morning, but the rest of the day was fine. At the conclusion of the day's play the Australians had lost eight wickets for 357 runs, compiled as follows : — Australians. — First Innings. — Darling, b Jessop, 24; Iredale, c Hayward, b Lockwood, 4 ; Hill, l.b.w. b Grace, 39 ; Worrall, c Townsend, b Brockwell, 28 ; Gregory, 1.b.w., b j Townsend, 124; Noble, not out, 116; McLeod, c Brockwell, b Townsend, 7 ; Layer, st Board, b Townsend, o ; Kelly, b Brockwell, 20; Trumble, b Brockwell, 7 ; Jones, b Brockwell, o ; Extras, 6 ; Total, 375. The match Australian Eleven v. the South of England was concluded. The visitors, who at the conclusion of play on the previous afternoon had lost eight wickets for 357 runs, proceeded with their innings, the not out men being Noble (105), and Trumble (6). The innings closed for a total of 375; Trumble and Jones were bowled by successive balls. Noble was over three hours at the wickets without giving a chance. South of England. — Second Innings. — Fry, c Trumble, b Jones, 12 ; Abel, c and b Trumble, 5 ; Brockwell, 1.b.w.. b. Australians. — Second Innings. — McLeod, b Mason, 1 ; Layer, not out, 3 ; Trumble, not out, 3 ; Total for one wicket, 7. The match was therefore drawn. The Australians only required 87 runs to win, and had nine wickets to fall.
