Bookkeeping in Schools
Mr Bridge, Chairman of the* Wanganui Education Board has sent the following letter to the Chronicle : — " Sir,— l have not changed the views that I expressed when talking with Mr Meuli about teaching elementary bookkeeping in our schools. I still think it should ba taught in say standard* V. and VI., provided room can be made for it, and intend to bring the queifcion before the oenferenos of , Boards to be held in Wellington, I do not think, however, that it should be included at present in the work of standard X, or, as il is more commonly known, standard VII. There are many subjects besides these laid down by the Board in the syllabus for this standard, thai; might be of great service to the children in after life, but it would be impossible to include ail. and there is *ure to be a difference of opinion abiut what should ba omitted. On December 81, 1899 there were only 102 boys and 145 girls in standard K. in the whole educational district, *nd you will easily see that if instruction in elementary book-k eping is co be of service to any number of our children it must begin earlier in heir school life. I would have written before but have only jn*t detn you rop >rt of the householders' meeting nn Monday last.
