FOXTON v. COMBINED TEAM

A team from the Foxton Tennis Club journeyed to Waitohi yesterday and played a match at Mr H. Hammond's pretty homestead against a united team of Sandon, Lower Rangitikei, Waitohi and Bulls players. Although the visitors left without some of their best players, and what was considered a weak team, they nevertheless did very fairly, and some splendid games were played during the day. the day was all thatvcpuld be desired, and a large number of persons were present to witness the match. Every game was well contested, and the victors and opponents alike came in for a lot of applause at the close of each game. In some of the games brilliant rallies were the order, and fine play was witnessed. It was decided to play 50 points in the Doubles and 40 in the Singles, and at the close it was found 14 games had been played, Foxton winning seven, and the untied team seven, the result however, was to be decided by points. Out of the large number of points scored by each side, a very small majority remained for the visitors, namely, ten. This was unfortunately not found to be the case until the visitors returned home, as it was thought the scores were equal when a count had been made.

The local players returned highly pleased with their trip,, and. thoroughly enjoyed the games. The hospitality shown by Mr and Mrs Hammond and the Misses Hammond was also very much appreciated, the comfort of the visitors being most .lavishly looked after. The match was^voted to be one of the best the members of the local Club has yet taken part in. Before leaving three cheers were given for the combined team, host and hostess, etc., which compliment was returned in a hearty manner. The following are the results : — SINGLES. Foxton. Combined.
