Wirokino Bridge.
• Our readers will notice that tenders for the erection of the Wirokino Bridge are invited in these columns, and that tenders close on the 6th of April. } This will be deemed most satisfactory, | but has only been achieved after a lot j of hard work by both the past and present Mayors. : Last week Mr Alf. Fraser, our Mayor, was deputed by the Borough Council to visit the members of the Government and try and get some finality to the endless correspondence, and the calling for tenders is the result. In. Wellington Mr Fraser interviewed the different officials and by dint of much push and the gentle art of persuasion not only secured the plans being passed by the, Engineer-in-' ' Chief at once but handed over to him to carry away in triumph to the other blocking departments. It has now been pitied that the department interesterrwill send an agreement signed by the Minister, to be signed by the Mayor, undertaking on the part of the government to pay one-half of the cost of the erection of the bridge up to-. £5,500, and thus this will make the amount sure whatever fate may befall the present Ministry. Any amount that may be required is available, so that should tenders be , received from suitable persons and at a sum within the estimate of the engineer, a contract' will probably be signed soon after the 1 6th of April. ! During Mr Fraser's stay in Welling[ton he interviewed the" Minister of Marine concerning the Wharangi leases, but from what fell during the talk he purposes recommending his Council to apply to the Lands Department. Mr Stevens, M.H.R.i lent •; Mr Fraser all the assistance possible, going with him when calling upon the Ministers.
