Railway Accident in Belgium.
TWENTY-ONE PERSONS
KILLED.
A dreadful accident has occurred on the main south-western railway running from Brussels to Mons, a town near the French frontier.
At Forest, a station not far from Liege, the express train came into collision with another train, with the result that both were telescoped. Twenty persons lost their lives and about a hundred were injured. Heavy fog was prevailing at the time of the disaster, and prevented the drivers seeing the danger in time to avert it.
There were 800 passengers on board the Mons express.
The guard seeing the collision was inevitable, applied the Westinghouse brake with such force that it uncoupled the engine, which crushed into three third-class carriages of the train for Tournay, which was standing at Forest Station.
The victims were terribly mangled. The driver of the express did not see the danger signals on account of the thickness of the fog.
