Foxton Borough Council.
» ii—ii ■ A special meeting of the above Council was held on Friday night at the Library Buildings at 7.30. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and Crs P. Hennessy, J. W. Walsh and W. B. Rhodes. An apology for non-attendance was read from Cr Westwood, and who was granted leave of absence. Correspondence was read from the Horowhenua County Council as follows : — To His Worship the Mayor, Sir, — I have the honor, instructed by my Council to. ask that you be good enough to direct that the following information be sent to this Council, namely, a definite statement as to what amount this Council is expected to contribute towards the erection of the bridge over the Manawatu River at Wirokino, and not to be exceeded. The foyowing copy ot a letter from James E. Falton, C.E., was ordered to be sent in reply : — "I only got a reply yesterday from the Marine Department, and now enclose you. a copy of the letter. I was told that the Shannon residents were petitioning for a swing span to be put in the bridge. Although such a span will be seldom used the Marine Department now ask us to provide one. It is most unfortunate as there will now be further loss of time, and I will have to alter my plans and specifications. I will go on with the necessary drawing of the swing span at once, if you will instruct me. Until it is prepared I cannot accurately estimate the addition of cost, but it won't exceed £300. I can say that the cost of the whole work, including the swing span and road approaches will not exceed the sum of £5,350, the amount of Mr J. Wilson's original estimate. On the proposition of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, The special resolution passed at a special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council held on the 17th day of January, 1899, was confirmed. The above resolution was in regard to the intention of the Council by virtue of a warrant, to borrow the sum I of £1000 for the construction of the 1 Wirokino Bridge. It was proposed by Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Walsh, That the Mayor wait on the Minister of Marine with John Stevens, Esq., M.H.R., and ask the Government to plant the reserves at Wharangi — the Foxton Health Resort — and that holders of present leases be granted the right to renew for a further term of fourteen (14) years, and future leases be for twenty-eight years, as the shortness of the present lease has prevented many from taking up sections and building thereon. Also the reserve when planted should be leased to the Borough at a nominal rent, so that they may be kept in good order and repair. Carried. An application was read from the committee of the Palmerston North Terrace End School for the use of Victoria Park for the annual school picnic on 15th March, and asking if arrangements could be made for the supply of hot water and milk for the visitors. Permission was granted, His Worship undertaking the duty of carrying out the committee's wishes. The Council then adjourned.
