The chief fighting is centred round Calocan and Bantamesa. Both sides used artillery, and the American cruisers Charleston, Concord, and Monadnock, shelled the insurgent position effectively. The Americana Advanced on Sunday and occupied six villages, expelling the Filipinos wirh heavy loss, many being drowned in the Pasig river, on which Manila is ntuated. Hundreds were taken prisoner?* The Americans lost 28 killed and 120 wonnded. The city of Manila sustained no damage and everything is now quiet. The attack haa strengthened the ohanoe of ratification by the United States Senate of the treaty of peace negotiated between Spain and America. The Spanish Government has refused to consider Aquinaldo's offer to ransom the Spanish prisoners held by him for 500,000 dols. and to surrender a large quantity of guns and ammunition, believing that for Spain to do so would be an infringement; of the treaty with America. The American troops under General Otis displayed great enthusiasm and fearlessness. The American navy did splendid execution to the enemies' flanks. Many of the insurgents were armed with Mauser rifles, and they also brought into action a few field pieces and quick firing guns.
