* BURGESS SENTENCED TO ,1M« PRISONMENT. The police have withdrawn the charge of theft preferred against the Li man Bargees, who was arrested at : Dalby after a desperate struggle on suspicion of being concerned in the i ■ ! murder of the Murphya at Gatton. A change of vagranoy was, however, substituted. Counsel for the prisoner contended that no evidence had been adduced to warrant punishment, but the police asked for \ > a conviction, alleging that it would ! ; be better for the prisoner to be removed from a district where be had inspired terror among tha women. * j Burgess was ultimately sentenced | to two months' imprisonment, notice of appeal being given. ■""■'[ The prisoner afterwards commuui- i oated to the police, through bis solicitor, an account of his movements during the Christmas holidays about which, up to the present, he had been reticent.
