Phenomenal Hail-storm.

A heavy thunderstorm broke over Christchurch on Thursday, and splendid rain fell. In most of the northern districts of Canterbury, along the foot of the hills, at Springfield, Aldington, Oxford and View Hill there was a phenomenal hail-storm, the hail-stones being as large as walnuts. At Woodside School, out of 60 windows only four were left unbroken, and many houses had windows broken on all four sides. The rain will be very welcome along the coast, but reports from inland districts show that the standing crops have been cut down in all directions, orchards stripped of fruit and many trees rendered almost leafless. The mailman at View Hill had his hat broken in, and was badly cut and bruised about the head. An estimate of the extent of the damage is at present impossible.
