«. In July las'; a serious conflct occurred at Shanghai between a body of Fiench' marines and the members of the Nioppo Guild a society formed to look after the interests of many thousands of Chinese who had been attracted
from the neighbouring town oi Ningpo. The conflict was the result of the refusal of fhe Chinese Governrnpn* to deliver up certain lauds, including a Ningpone^e jos-» h •u-e and ' cemetery which the French claimed as belonging to their settlement a Shanghai. France offered monetary compensation and a new site for thj >ss house and cemetery, but tl is was refused. Now Fiance demand valuable territory in the Yang-ta - Kiang Valley as compensation for the non«recognition of her claims to the land in Shanghai. Liv EungYu, the Viceroy of Nanking province has refused to accede to the French demands, and is preparing to resist them. _______=_■______________■
