School Matters in Auckland.
A deadlock has arisen between the Board of Education and the City Schools Committee, involving the question of the right of the committee to close five large schools in defiance of instructions to the contrary issued by the Board. The committee decided recently to close the schools until further notice in consequence of the prevalence of measles, and reported accordingly to the Board, which decided that the schools should be re-opened to-day. On Monday morning the chairman of the committee secured the keys of the schools, and kept them locked, informing the headmasters that he would write to the Board informing it of his action. He did so, quoting section 35 of the Board's regulations. The Board met and decided to demand the keys from the chairman of the committee. A messenger was sent for the keys and was refused them. The Board will meet again soon and decide what further action shall be taken. The matter has been settled by the Committee yielding.
