The German Emperor at Jerusalem.
When the Emperor William was at Jerusalem he acquired by gift from the Sultan as a mark of personal friendship the piece of ground which, according to tradition, was the abode of the Virgin Maryr The Pope and the Emperor exchange congratulations and the telegrams upon the circumstance is evidence of Russian feeling against Germany. The Russian press is most hostile in tone, declaring Anglo-Ger-man rapproachement to be an underhand plot against Russia, and is particularly offensive in view of the kindly offices accorded to Germany in China in the recent tariff negotiations. William's visit to Palestine is characterised as an impudent attempt to undermine Russian influence in Turkey and the position of the orthodox church in Palestine. It is said that Russia in order to thwart Germany has come into close touch with Austria, and the two with France will oppose Germany in the Orient.
