The Battle of Navarino.
A survivor of the B-ittle of Nava. rino, fought in 1827, and by which che libt-rly of Greece was forced from che Turks by the Powers, is an inmate of the Old Men's Home in New P.yiriou'h. The veteran, Mr William Baker, is a nonagenarian, and on the 71st anniversary of the battle last week ho and the inmates of the House were entertained afc tea by local residents.
Toe battle took place between tlie combined fleets of England, France, and Russia nndjr the command of Admiral Codrington ; and they nearly destroyed the Turkish and Egyptian fleet. More than thirty ships, many )f them four-deckers, were blown up or bumf, chiefly by the Tuik3 themdelve?, to prevent them falling into the hands of their enemies. This destructipn of the Turkish naval power was characterised by the Duke of Wellington as an •* untoward event."
