Englands Naval Expenditure.
Lord Brassey in the course of an interview with the Press representatives explained how England bore the naval expenditure belter than other countries 1 Lord Brassey said it was a most remarkable thing that the more the British Government proposed to spend on the navy the more popular did it become. He was not politioal economist enough to be able to fix the limit of the British taxpayers', endurance, in th<* matter of naval expenditure, but they certainly were able to bear more than tho taxpayers of other countries could. A reason for this was that Great Britain was self-contained, and consequently the expenditure had not such an exhausting effect as it would have in the case of other countries. The money was to-day received from the taxpayer, tomorrow it was in the Treasury, the next day tt was at the disposal of the Admiralty, and from the Admiralty it went to the workmen, by whom it was. circulated throughout the country . once more. That was the process that went on in connection with naval expenditure in the O's Country. If Great Britain had to place orders abroad tor ships and armaments, as other countries had, the effect would be far more exhausting. •
