The Horse Fiend.
The horse-fiend, who has ceaaed operations since January, has again started work,, and daring Saturday night two valuable trotting stallions, the property of Mr J. Horler, were killed on h ; s property, Upper Riccarton. Ooe, a six-year-old by Brooklyn, waa found dead in his box with the jugular vein severed. The other a four-year-old by the same horse, was found dead in a paddock with a shot wound in his head. An examination shows that the deed was done with an ordinary shot-gun and a round bullet, which appears to have been melted from tea lead. The shot must have been fired at close quarters. The horse was only 100 yds from the house, bat the inmates heard nothing. This makes 15 horses killed in about three years. The first one was Mr Horler's trotting sire Brooklyn, and the latest victims are his progeny. About nine months ago Mr Horler found that the horse which was stabbed last night had been poisoned in his box, but prompt measures saved its life.
