The first account of an eruption o Mount Vesuvious Sates from 241 Augnat, 79. AD., when the cities n' Pompeii and Hercnlaueom were destroyed and more than 203.000 persons perished . In 1681. 4,000 persona were destroyed.* A violent outburst occurred in 1769 tod 1767. One in Jdne 1794, the lava flowed over 5000 acres of rich vineyards and cultivated land, and Torre del Greco was a second time burned ; the top of the mountain fell in, leaving the •rater two miles in circumference. The following heavy eruptions took place in 1822, 1855. 1868 (which •anted great destruction), in 1861, . 1865, 1868, 1872, 1876, and in 1878 lava was ipouted to the height of 800 feet.
