Foxton Mutual Improvement Society.

The usual weekly meeting of the froxton Mutual Improvement Society was held on Tuesday evening when there was a large attendance of mem, bers, the subject being the much de. bated one " Free Trade v. Protection," the Rev. Woollass in the chair. Mr Jonson, affirmative, and Mr E. Osborne negative, fully occupied their time limits of 30 minutes, the other speakers being Messrs Simpson, Howan, Blake. Hamer and Banks. From the tone of the debate it was evident that Freetrade was going to have the worst of it and so it proved, as the Protectionist party had an overwhelming majority on a vote being taken. During the evening the prizes won at the last competitions were presented to * the following :— Miss Simpson, singing; Miss L. Austin, reciting ; Mr Betty, singing; Mr T. Westwood, reciting. The next evening was announced to be the " Ladies Evening."
