Foxton Borough Council.

» — The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place at the Library Buildings iasfc night at 7.80 o'clock. Present— The Mayor (Or J. R. Stansell), and Crs P. Henneaay, J. W. Walsh, W. B. Rhodes, H. Coley, T. Westwood and Alf. Fraser. The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence also the Treasurer's report was read. treasubbb's' eepobt. The treasurer made the following statement to the Council. The debit balance at the bank on the Borough Fund Aocount was £160 Is 4d, and the other accounts were in credit to the following amounts : — Reserves, £12 11s 8d ; Cemetery, £88 4s Id; Library £6 18s Bd, which reduces the debit balance at the bank as regards interest charged. Lately there has been paid* for metal received from the railway the sum of £140 63 3d, for 1202 tons, and there has been paid for cartage | £58 18s 4d, making a total of £198 [ 19a 7d. The present condition of rates for 1 1898 99 shows that the amount payable is £435, out of which only £186 has been received, thus a balance to come in of £299. The accounts to be passed for payment amount to £166 10s Bd, bat as these include payments on account of Cemetery £12, Library £3 6a, Licensing £4 19s 93, Reserves £1 113 6d, Charitable Aid £14 7s 2d, and a sum already paid by the bank >f £67 6s 3d, leaves only a balance due by the Borough Fund Account of £68 Is.

Add this Bum of £68 Is to (be debit balance of £160 Is 4d we get the sum of £228 2s id, from which a refund from the Manawatu Licensing District is doe of £88 18s 9d, thai farther redacing the overdraft of the Borough Fund Account to £189 18s , 7d, bat actually, by the oredita lying at the bank on the first mentioned r accounts, the overdraft on which interest is payable by the Borough will be only £182 0* 7d. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the accounts for charitable aid to Herbert Savell be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Coley, That the Treasurer's re> port be adopted as read. Carried. Accounts amounting to £166 tos 8d were passed for payment. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Walsh, That the Town Clerk be requested to have the pumps in the Avenue and Main-street seen to, and new suckers be provided if necessary, and to take such steps as may be required to give water to residents. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Westwood, That the following , nff-is bp accepted: — A. Speire, £8 134 for repairs to Ferry house, and F. E. Janks £4 10s for painting Ferry bouse, and £1 108 for .repairing cbe paint work of pound schedule board. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cc Goley, That a full public holiday be declared for Foxton on Thursday, 17th November, 1898, being the second show day at Palmerston North of the Manawatu and We-t Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Carried. Proposed by.Cr West wood, seconded by Or Fraser, That the Beserves Committee have power to deal wi'h .Reserve No. 477 in reference to fonciDg for the purpose of handing the property over to the new lessee. Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood; seconded by Cr Walsh, That the letter of H. Cole be considered at next meeting. Carried. ■ Proposed by Or Westwood, mo* I onded by Or Walsh, That the Application of George Gray to place » culvert in Main street be granted. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That the following alteration be made in rate book and valuation roil, sections 21S to 218, Emma Andresen, in place of John Alfred Perreau. Carried. Eight tenders were received for leasing the Borough Reserve, containing about 244 acres for a term of 21 years. The following were the tenders : — F. Gall, f>r62 acres. £15 12s 0d; Walsh ami Howan, for whole area, £85 103 ; C. P. Nelson, far 62 acres, £24 14s, f >r 77 acres £9 12« lid, for 104 acres £5 4s ; W. F. Purcell, fqr 62 acres £18 15?, for 77 acres £9 12s lid, and for 104 acres £18 ; A. Speirs, foe whole £18 s*. for distant half £16 lUs, for 62 acrea £1% 8a ; 0. Baker for whole, £81 ; B. Hoicrof f.ir who'e £25, for sections 62 acres tincl 77 acres, £20; W. E. Barber, for 62 acres,. £12 10s. Proposed by Or Hennessy, seconded by Cr Coley, That W. F. Purcell's tender for Borough Beserve, No. 447 ; be accepted on the following terras : —No. 1 section of 62£ acres at Qs per acre, £18 15a ; No. 2 and 8, sections of 77$ and 104 acres, at 2* 61 per acre, £22 12s lid. Total, £41 7s lid. Carried. The Mayor said that ai the present sitting would be the last that.' Cr Caley would attend, hia term having expired, he thanked him and also Crs West wood and Walsh for the help they had rendered him in carrying out bis dutieß as Mayor. As Crs Weatwood and Walsh had again decided to seek re-election, he hoped that the result of the election would see both of these gentlemen again in their position. Or Westwood thanked the Mayor for his kindly remarks, and said he believed they had all tried to do what was beet for the Borough, and administer the funds of the Borough to the beat advantage. Crs Ooley and Walsh also returned thanks to the Mayor for his remarks. The Oouncil then adjourned.
