The Ballance butter factory at Pahiatua has a surplus of £1500 this year to be divided among the^suppliers They have been paid at the rate of 7 hd per lb throughout the season. Lord Ranfurly will pay an official visit to Feilding on Friday, September gth when his Excellency and suite will be entertained at a luncheon. Owing to the prevalence of accidents the London insurance companies are raising the premiums on cyclists. In the case of Fleming v. Bank of Zealand, a. claim of damages for the dishonour of cheques, heard at Dunedin, Ur Justice Pennefather held that defendant was not entitled to a nonsuit, and gave judgement for plaintiff for £2000 and costs. It is reported that Russia is parleying with Spain for a coaling station at the Philippines. Mr Cecil Rhodes has declared that he.wiil never leave South Africa till he sees there is no risk of President Kruger dominating the country. Major Gudgeon has been appointed to fill the position of British Resident at Rarotonga, vacated by Mr Ross. Maior Gudgeon has filled the position of Commissioner of Police, Under Secretary for Defence, and latterly, Judge of the Naiive Land Court. His knowledge of the native race and his habit of exercising authority are supposed to fit him peculiarly for dealing with the people of Rarotonga. The American Naval Board of Construction proposes to build three battleships, three first-class, three secondclass and three unprotected cruisers, all of unusual speed, with great steaming capability, permitting them to make an uninterrupted run from San Francisco to the furthest colony, at a cost of 56,000,000d01. These vessels are in addition to the eight warships now in course of constuction. New Zealand lime, consigned from kilns direct to farmers, to be used tor manuring farm lands, will in future be carried free by the Railway Department for distances not exceeding 100 miles, subject to the following provisions :— (a) That application for the concession is made by the proprietor of the lime-kiln and approved by the department 14 days prior to the date on which it is desired to send the first consignment; (b) that the price charged to the farmers for the lime does not exceed the price charged for agricultural lime prior to May Ist ; (c) I that a certificate is given declaring that the line is consigned to a " bona fide " farmer, and is for use in manur- ! ing farm land cultivated by him. On Friday the following telegram was received from Sydney. Potatoes are scarce and the market is strong. New Zealand prime are quoted at £7 10s to £7 15s. Some holders decline to quote, and a further rise is imminent. Onions are very scarce, and £17 was offered and refused for the consignment by the Talune. The Powers refuse to permit any more Turkish troops to be landed in Crete. Italy has advised the Porte not to revert to the question again. The Sultan is furious at the limitation of his authority. When in Wellington on Thursday morning we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr J. R. Montague on his return to the colony after his trip to England, he having jnst landed by the steamer from Sydney. We understand that he will shortly open a branch of his large busiyess in Wellington. He looked in capital health and said he had a very pleasant time away. Mr Grave the Inspector of Agencies of the Australian Widows Fund Life Assurance Society Ld. was in town on Saturday making arrangements for establishment of an agency here. We understand that Mr A. Southy Baker has been appointed agent for Palmerston North. It is notified elsewhere that the Rabbit Inspectors have laid poison foa rabbits and so it will be wise to give a care to one's animals. Mr Andrews, representing Mr Bridge, dentist, is now in town and can be consulted up to to-night at Mr Hamer's chemist shop. At the Red House word can be learned about a draught mare there is for sale or exchange for a trap horse. Clocks and watches in any number and variety, are now on sale at Joe Tos's shop. The Borough Council invite applications from competent persons for Town Clerk. Applications must be sent in by the 15 September. Notice is given ot an election of three Councillors in the room of Crs. Westwood, Walsh and Coley who retire by rotation. This morning Mr Gayne clerk at the local railway station, had to leave for the Palmerston hospital. Messrs Abraham and Williams hold a stock sale at Palmerston on Thursday. We are glad to here that the price of flax is again hardening.
A sale of work all day on Tuesday, 30th August, and a concert in the evening h advertised on the occasion of the opening of All Saints' school room. ■ So.-.:e excitement was caused in town on Saturday afternoon by the arrival of a big-built man who expressed himself desirous of purchasing iuxmills, the number and price bein ; \ of little moment. It was re^ portr 1 thot one local miller had made a very satisfactory deal pending actual settlfiiient, but the purchaser left hunvdly and unexpectedly by the steamer yesterday fcr Westport. Since then there is a rumour that other people are anxious to know of his whereaboutsi Yesterday afternoon Master Frank McQueen climed up one of the goal posts in the school ground and the post breaking gave the lad a heavy fall to the ground which put his elbow out. He went away to the Palmerston hospital this morning.
