A Duel.
A duel in wbich the late Prince Bismarck was once engaged had a very amusing origu. It occurred when the young " blood " was Chief Secretary of the Prussian Legation at Frankfort. Being very popular he went much into society, and one Christmas attended a big ball. Daring the height of the festivities Bismarck's, and, indeed, everybody's attention wa3 directed -to an exceeding pompous individual who strutted about the loom. Thia was a M. de Clancy, a Frenchman, and a noted duellist. Latter on this important individual took part in a dance but, having omitted tcsjeave his hat at the proper place, had perforce to hold it out almost at arm's length while he danced. The sprctacle tickled Biemarck immensely, and as the Fre-chman came sailing majestically along Bismark stepped for ward and dropped a coin into the hat ! Of course, a duel was one of the next day's events. Though it Wits with pistols, Bismarck's lucky star never deserted him. lie escaped unhurt, while his adversary was wounded.
