THREATENED BOMBARDMENT OF MANILA.
The Spaniards in Manila were making great preparations for resistance when the latest mail left and evidently intended to compel the Americans to bombard the city. The women and ohildern and the wounded soldiers have been removed to the walled portion of tbe town suburbs. The bridges approaching the city had been destroyed. The officers of the German warships were making themselves most agreeable to the Spaniards, and were stimulating, the troops to make stubborn resistance. | Friction existed between the rebel
leaders, and the two who were suspected of attempting to form a party of their own had been seized and imprisoned by Aquinaldo. The German attitude with regard to the Philippines is still most suspicious. The German cruiser Irena (4206 tons, 8 guns) threatened to fire if the rebels attacked Isla Grande. • Admiral Dewey immediately sent two ships and captured the garrison, the Irena retiring on the Americans' appearance.
