THE BOMBARDMENT.
The .warships Brooklyn (9125 tons) Texas (6800 tons) and Indiana (10,200 tons) began the bombardment of Santiago, but, owing to the high cliffs, and the distance of the city from the coast, the shells fell | short. , The bombardment of Santiago is i still ineffective, mo3t of the shells falling into the harbour. One struck i a church where a large quantity of ammunition was stored. The t ammunition exploded. ' General Blanco ordered his troops , to fight to the last. General Mjles, who has arrived at Siboney, on the outskirts of Santiago - takes the entire command of the . American forces. 1 On land the artillery forces were - engaged in a mild artillery duel with the Spanish, but the general attack f will be deferred until the reinforce- [ ments until General Henry reach the front;, thus enabling the Americans > to better block the passes to the 1 westward. j ________
