Flax.
On Saturday His Worship the Mayor obtained a number of signatures to the following petition, which he at once forwarded to our member, J. Stevens, Esq., who was asked to present it : — PETITION. To the Hon. the Mm. of Agriculture. We, the undersigned flaxmillers and business men residing .in the neighbourhood of Foxton, do most respectfully pray that you will obtain from the Agent-General a weekly report of the state of the hemp market in London. Sdffhe nine years ago this course was adopted by the Govrrnment, but was only abandoned when the price fell below what was thought a paying price. It is well known that no industry gives so much employment to unskilled la- | hour .as the flax trade, and it is an industry worked by poor men for poor men, and the State would be justified jn granting the prayer of this petition to help so much at such a small cost. And your petitioners as in duty bcund will ever pray, &c, &c.
