The Schooner Whangaroa.
The above vessel arrived at the wharf about v o'clock this morning, in tow of the s.s. Queen of the South. As the Whangaroa since leaving here for Sydney met with . the terrible weather during which the large steamer, Maitland, had both paddle-boxes wrenched off, and became a total wreck, an account of how our locally owned schooner behaved we knew would be of interest to our readers. We are obliged to Captain Cozens for the following report: — Schooner, Whangaroa ; Cozens, Master; Messrs Gammon & Co., owners, sailed from Foxton, for Sydney, on 25th April. Experienced light and variable weather, which culminated on May sth into a very heavy, gale from
S.E., the vessel at this time being about 60 miles from her destination. During the height of this gale, the wind blew with hurricane violence, and the sea rapidly rose, being in the opinion of the Master, the heaviest sea experienced by him in over 20 years voyaging across theTasman Sea. For ten days the vessel was hove to under close reefed canvas, but behav«4^ ing splendidly, came through unin- * jured, and without losing a single stick of her large deck cargo. Arrived at Sydney on May i6th, and left there for Newcastle on 23rd, sailing thence for Foxton on 29th May. Left Newcastle 29th May, experienced easterly weather throughout the passaga till arrival off the Manawatu bar on the 16th instant. Being unable I to get over the bar had to keep to sea «p and on the 17th experienced a strong Tr N.W. gale with heavy sea and rain. On Saturday took anchorage under Kapiti on the South anchorage, and remained till this morning at 3 a.m. when the Queen of the South took her in tow ana crossed the bar at 9.30. The Whangaroa has on board 220 tons best screened Hetton coal con* signed to Messrs Gamman and Co. . and it is all sold.
