THE BOMBARDMENT OF SANTIAGO.
Admiral Sampson telegraphs that the bombardment completely silenced the guns at the Santiago de Cuba forts on Monday, and that the American vessels suffered no damage. At 7 o'clock in the morning, dura dense fog, the fleet, in double column, with the Brooklyn (9158 tons) leading fche westward and the New York (8150 tons) the eastward divisions, sent a torrent of shells into the forts. The Spaniards replied promptly, but their shots went wide. Tbe Brooklyn and Texas quiokly silenced the batteries. The Brooklyn at a range of 800 yard 3 destroyed the Estrella forts, while the smaller vessels swept the inshore batteries. The New York and New Orleans followed, clearing the Castro and burning the Qatar ina forts. Owing to the presence of an Americaa lieutenant as a prisoner at Morrofort, Admiral Sampson ordered it not to be attacked. The Spaniard? abandoned the cruising ship Meredes. INVASION OF CUBA. Twenty-nine transports with 27,000 American troops and large supplies of ammunition have sailed from Tampa.
It is expected that they will land at Santiago on Saturday, when a naval attack on Admiral Cerveras' squadron is to be made. Rear-Admiral Sampson's squadron has been reinforced by 650 marines. General Shufter commands the San-* tiago contingent, and General Coppinger a fores which has been sent to Puerto Rico. The Santiago force comprises-—ln-fantry, 16 regiments of regulars and n regiments ot volunteers; cavalry, five squadrons ; artillery, six batteries. An American force attempted to land at Aquadores (?Aquadilla), but was repulsed. Reports from Cape Haytien are to the effect that there was a severe engagement on Tuesday at Caimamera, 40 miles east of Santiago. Five American warships bombarded the place until the Spaniards abandoned the forts and fled into the interior. Four thousand Spanish regulars and five hundred volunteers are engaged in the defence of Santiago.
