LIEUTENANT HOBSON'S EXPLOT.

Lieutenant Hobson, who, with seven volunteers, " torpedoed " a hulk at the entrance to the harbour at Santiago de Cuba, steamed through the narrow channel and passed four forts whioh were firing heavily on him at ascertained ranges over the mines, which the Spaniards believed to be impassable. He anchored his ves3elin a bend arranged beforehand, and waited until the ship swung broadside on and then touched the button exploding the torpedoes. The bulk sank immediately, and the Spaniard thereupon displayed the white flag, which Lieutenant Hobson accepted. The naval authorities at Washington are greatly pleased at Admiral Cerveras' recognition of the bravery of Lieutenant Hobson. This officer studied at Woolwich, and graduated at the American Naval Academy.
