An advance is also asked for Manila rope. We are given to understand the supply of Manila cigars in the Australian- colonies is particularly low just now -in fact, it is reported there is now more than about two months' supply in Melbourne, aud holders hate raised their prices 20 per cent. Manilas were put ,up another £2 per 1000 yesterday. So far no advices have been received warranting a rise in the price of tobacco, but they may come forward at any moment. No doubt storekeepers and others are replenishing their stocks in case a sudden advance should take place. Potatoes are rapidly increasing in price, and recently in Maryborough and the South could not be got under £5 per ton at the stations. A firm in Ohristchurch have been paying £4 10s per ton for potatoes in the pit, and have purchased over 2000 tons at this price. Of these, 1600 tons are, we understand, to be dis patched to Sydney, and the remainder reserved for New Zealand sales. For these the firm expect to receive from £8 to £9 per ton. The market for produce is generally excited. Oats are steadily increasing, and whereas on Friday flour was «on;. offer at £18 per ton, on Monday the price had risen to £li per ton.— N.Z. Times.
