COURTSHIP NOW AND THEN.
A leading English paper says, that marriage is on the decrease is a general complaint, especially with mothers whom Providence has bountifully blessed with daughters ; year by year it becomes worse, and possibly the modern method of courtship has something to do with it. Young people now-a-days know too much of each other, and familiarity breeds contempt; a little glamour, a little distance lends enchantment, imparts a rarer beauty to Angelina's features, and softens her voice. Edwin has no opportunity of exhibiting his bad temper when things get unpleasant, and of disclosing traits that would disqualify him for the position of ideal husband as set forth by certain lady novelists. Now they know each other's weaknesses too clearly, and, seeing each other under every disadvantageoui condition, hesitate on the
brink. Possibly our great-grandmothers were wiser than we wot of, and realised that a little illusion about our friends characters is one of the necessities of everyday life.
