AN AMERICAN MISTAKE.

The Amerioan gunboat Annapolis (1000 tons) captured the Frencb steamer Lafayette affcer an exciting chase.

The Lafayette was attempting to enter Havana by nighfc.

Although stopped and warned not to approach Havana, the steamer Lafayette made a daring attempt to run the blockade. Four Amerioan cruisers chased the vessel and captured her. The oaptain again attempted to escape, but fcwo solid shots fired at the vessel compelled him to yield. The French steamer Lafayette has been released, the Washington authorities having promised Franoe that they would permit mails and passengers to be landed at Havana.
