The Rifle Corps.
CANNOT ACCEPT SERVICES. This week Mr J. R. Stansell received the following. correspondence, being a reply to the offer of the services of a rifle corps, made in August last year ; — Militia and Volunteer Office, Wellington, 21st April, 1898. John Rainbow Stansell, Esq., Foxton. ___^. Sir, — Referring to the offer anWrvice of a Rifle Corps at Foxton, the following letter has been received, and in furnishing you with a copy of same, I desire to convey the thanks of the Government to you and the gentlemen associated with you, as directed in the concluding paragraph of same. I have, &c, Stuart Newall, Lieut.-Col. Commd. District, Defence Office, Wellington, 18th April, 1898. The Officer Commanding Militia ana" Volunteer Office, Wellington. SiR,-r-With reference to previous correspondence I have now the honor to intorm you that the Hon. the Defence Minister regrets that under the new organization of the district he cannot accept the services of the proposed Rifle Volunteer Corps at Foxton and Stratford. Should, however, there be any change in the future a notification will be sent you. Please thank the gentlemen concerned for the trouble taken by them in the matter. I have, &c, A. P.
