The Dervish general,' Mahmud, has a9kfd the Khalifa to give him fresh instructions prior to his action against the British army. He points out that the concentration of the British forces prevents any attack on Berber by the Dervishes. The British gunboats have captured Shendy, the Dervish stronghold on the Nile, opposite Metemmeh. Dervi«hes to the number of 700 assembled in front of Shendy. Three British gunboats shelled them, while the Egyptian forces outflanked the enemy, who fled. They were pursued for 20 miles, 160 being killed. Their forts were destroyed and large quantitiea of grain, stores and ammunition captured. Six hundred slaves were . also liberated. A Reuters message says that Mahmud is practically besieged, and his, forces in a state of starvation.
