Much Too Smart.
A Manaia man got rather badly taken down by a spieler at the recent Taranaki Meeting. He had five tickets on a winning horse and was making his way to the pay out box when a stranger approached, and handing him a ticket asked him to be good enough to collect it at the same time. Just as the Manaia man had worked his way to the pigeon hole, the stranger again came up, and asked for the return of his ticket, saying he get the / dividend himself. A ticket was given him back, and when the Manaia man presented his for payment he discovered' that the stranger had given him a losing ticket, and had received a winning one in return. It was " good " sport then to see the way the Manaiaite bucked round and sought round the enclosure for his man. The ticket, however, had been handed to a confederate for collection, and spieler No. i sought a different part of the ground for the remainder of the day. — Witness,
