Explosion on the Maine.
The news cf the explosion en the United Slates warship Maine, in Uavannah harbour, Cuba, caused a htavy fail of sleeks on Ihe New York Stock Exchange. There was \ lvcovery, however, at the close of tho day.
The thip'd officers slate that the explosion originated in the central magazines. A few of the crew were enabl« to reach the dtck, but the men were mostly asleep and were jammed in the torpedo department. The captain was the last to leave the ship.
Nineiy (f Ihe Maine's crew were terribly scalded.
The New York Journal has offered 50,000d0l for evidence that the explosion was a criminal outrage.
The chief American newspapers acquit the Spanish Government of any implication, though they are cautious about accepting the accident theory.
