ARRESTED ON SUSPICION.
Information was at once given to Constable Salmon of the occurrence, and he lost no time in investigating the affair. From enquiries made suspicion was directed to two suspicious characters who arrived in town that day, and who had both left on Friday morning, one going in the direction of Shannon, and the other's destination not known.
Within a mile of Shannon the Constable arrested a man who gave the name of Thomas Edwards, and on being searched two pawn tickets were found from pawnbroker's shops in Palmerston North in the name of J. Turner of a recent date.
The prisoner showed much surprise at his arrest, and when asked how it was he did not give his correct name, said he could please himself in that matter.
It is only right to add that the prisoner gave an account oi his proceedings and the place he lodged at, which has been found to be in the main true of the night in question. The accused was brought before one of the justices this morning and remanded for three days.
