Attempted Burglary at Foxton.
I +. RAILWAY STATION BROKEN INTO. NOTHING ABSTRACTED. Some time last Thursday night' the railway station at Foxton was entered by some one with evidently a burglarious intention, but fortunately nothing has been missed. Everything was left in order by the stationmaster (Mr Imrie) after the arrival of the 8.30 train that night,~and what cash there was put into the safe and the building locked up. His surprise may be imagined to discover on going down in the morning to find that a pane of glass had been broken, and when inside to see undoubted traces that an attempt had been made to rob the sate. It is believed that the would-be thief is no professional at his work, as instead of breaking a pane immediately above the latch of the window, it was broken at least a good arm's length from the side.
The window being opened successfully, the burglar lost no time in getting inside, and on the blotting-pad on the desk was left the print of a naked foot, which is easily traceable, it being a wet night. The platform consisting of fine
limestone, a quantity of this material also adheres to the pad. Similar traces were found in the room and a great many round the safe, it evidently being puzzling how he was to open it; . There are aisd other signs of other places that excited his or their curiosity, but nothing was disturbed. Several years ago the same station was entered and the safe removed in the night to the cutting along the line and there opened, the robbers on that occasion getting a fair amount for their night's work; but of Course there must have been two or more thiefs at that time.
It is hard to say if there was more than one in this attempt, possibly there was, as the safe is now immovable, being fastened down with bolts since the former robbery, and it is very probable that a robbery similar to the first one has been frustrated.
