Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JAN. 27, 1898. The Wirokino Bridge.

His Worship the Mayor has been making such good work towards getting the bridge over the Manawatu river that.it behoves all good citizens to help him to the utmost. Though it is recognised that the | Mayor is the representative of the people yet it is sometimes well that the people loudly proclaim the fact and emphatically announce their approval of his action. We all want the bridge, that is the residents in j the Borough, and a very large number of settlers in the Manawatu and Horowhenua Counties also want the bridge, and as might be expected, some do not. The actions of these Councils are swayed by the coun cillors and unless they are urged to take action what is eve rybody's business is no body's business and matters are left in abeyance. In thig question of the bridge the' Borough Council has done good work in taking the leading part, and as it is advisable that the Government should be made aware that the bridge is not only of interest to the Borough, it would appear well if the Mayor was to call a public meeting and get a deputation appointed to wait on the neighbouring local bodies for the purpose of representing to the Government thtir desire that every assistance should be given towards its erection. There need be j no discussion as to ways and means for tbe Aot provides a simple and ! inexpensive way of settling tha oon tributions of interested bodies, and one which seems the only and' the most satisfactory way of arriving at the same. No time should be lost as every Government is only too pleased at delay as then possibly the promise of assistance may be forgotten or a vote lapsed, which thus leaves a similar sum to be judiciously applied elsewhere. From whafc we learn everything is in a satisfactory state to secure the bridge if ifc is shown to be a public want, and that can easily be done, if a little more public interest is shown, not felt as we know it is, in the business.
