It is stated that the French have occupied the large island of Hainan, off the southern coast of China. Eight British warships, with four torpedo boats, have arrived at Chemulpo, Corea, in order to prevent the dismissal of Mr J. McLeary Brown, Superintendent of the Corean Customs, at the instigation of Russia. Mr McLeary Brown, Financial Adviser in Corea, who Russia demanded should be dismissed, and M. Great activity is being displayed in the naval yard at Hongkong, and the movements of the British fleet now in Port Hamilton are being kept secret.
