The World's Largest Telescope.
The'world's largest telescope is now in position at the Yerkea Observatory in the University of Chicago. Its object lens is 40in diameter, this being the diameter of the clear aperture after allowing for the rim of the " cell " which holds the lens in its place. It is constituted of the usual two discs of different optical gla33 required to correct chromatic aberration. The outer crown lens is about 2£in thick at the centre, and fin at the edge, and weighs 2001 b. The flint lens, separated from its companion by a distance of nearly BJin (for convenience in cleaning) is about l£in thick at the centre and , 2in in thickness at the pdge. Ita weight is more than 3001 b. The
weight of t^| compound cell in its iron cell, in which it is mounted on aluminium bearings, is 1000! b.
